Empower a Girl… Change the World…

On a recent weekend getaway with some of my best girlfriends, I was introduced to an idea that up until that moment I had given NO THOUGHT to

What do you think young girls and women living in global communities do when they have their period, especially when poverty is an issue? It is such a basic question, yet one with not a simple answer! In developed countries such as ours, we as women may view our menstrual cycle as an inconvenience or an annoyance, or even a health challenge. Generally speaking (outside of some of the more extreme menstrual symptoms that women may experience), menstruating does not prevent us from going to work or school, or from participating in most daily happenings. But for young girls and women in underdeveloped countries, they literally cannot leave their homes when they menstruate…

Days for Girls International

“What if not having sanitary supplies meant DAYS without school, DAYS without income, DAYS without leaving the house? Girls use leaves, mattress stuffing, newspaper, corn husks, rocks, anything they can find…but still miss up to 2 months of school every year. It turns out this issue is a surprising but instrumental key to social change for women all over the world. The poverty cycle can be broken when girls stay in school…”

This is where I became totally intrigued with a Foundation called Days for Girls International. I quickly became very passionate about the idea that something as simple as helping a girl stay in school or stay at her job could fundamentally contribute to girls that are educated, healthy and empowered. This can ultimately allow them to pull themselves, their children and their communities out of poverty. So it turns out that investing in girls is key to eliminating poverty and creating a safer, brighter future for everyone.

Days for Girls has a simple yet powerful mission: “Creating a more dignified, free and educated world through access to lasting feminine hygiene solutions.”

Days for Girls International has helped over 100,000 women live with independence by providing washable feminine hygiene solutions to impoverished women who had previously gone without. An estimated twice that many have been helped by training and encouraging other NGO’s to do likewise…

Several of us at True Potential spent a few hours one afternoon helping to assemble 100 kits which are now ready for distribution. It felt really great to be a part of this kind of change…
