International Osteopathic Healthcare Week is celebrated from April 15-21, 2018. This year, the focus of this celebratory week, both nationally and provincially is in educating the public about how to choose your osteopathic practitioner.

It’s important for the public to know that the practice of osteopathy is not regulated in Saskatchewan, which means the title is not protected and you may find people calling themselves an osteopath even if they don’t have training. So, how can you protect yourself and make the best decision about seeking osteopathic care for you and your family?

How to Choose Your Osteopath Practitioner

Anyone seeking osteopathic manual therapy should start with the Saskatchewan Association of Osteopaths (SAO). Members of the SAO are qualified therapists, and student members are currently studying osteopathy at a qualified institution. The Saskatchewan Association of Osteopaths is a member of the Canadian Federation of Osteopaths.

All provincial associations that are members of the Canadian Federation of Osteopaths (CFO) must adhere to the World Health Organization Benchmarks for Education in Osteopathy. This means that when you choose your practitioner from the one of the provincial associations that are a part of the CFO you can feel confident that you’re choosing an effective and safe practitioner.
