Easy Meal Prep: Nut Butter Quinoa Balls

This week’s easy meal prep recipe is a sweet snack to keep on hand for when a sugar craving strikes. They can be made in under 30 minutes and are vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free.

Puffed quinoa is rich in fibre and protein, and the fat from the quinoa and nuts makes the snack more filling. The nutty flavour of the quinoa blends perfectly with the nut butter for a tasty and satisfying treat.

You can find puffed quinoa at your local health food store, or you can easily make your own puffed quinoa by simply adding quinoa in a single layer to a pan over medium-high heat and cooking for 1-3 minutes, or until quinoa pops. Just like when you’re making popcorn, be sure to shake the pan while cooking to keep the quinoa from burning.

Ingredients:
✔️ 1 cup puffed quinoa
✔️ 1/2 cup natural nut butter of your choice (peanut, almond, and sunflower seed butters work great)
✔️ 1–4 tbsp agave nectar (depending how sweet you want it)
✔️ 1 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:
1. Combine the nut butter, agave and vanilla.
2. Stir in puffed quinoa.
3. Place in fridge for 15 min if really soft, then roll into balls.
4. Store in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze to enjoy later!

Dr. Fleury's Tips for Spring Allergies

As leaves reemerge, flowers bloom, and the warm sunshine returns…so do spring allergies. Symptoms of seasonal allergies include: itchy skin, a runny nose, sneezing, itchy, watery, or bloodshot eyes. If you are affected by seasonal allergies, it's your immune system that is so reactive to the environment. (If the environment was the problem then everyone would have spring allergies, but this isn’t the case.)

The biggest spring allergy trigger is pollen.
Trees, grasses, and weeds release these tiny grains into the air to fertilize other plants. When they get into the nose of someone who’s allergic, they send the body’s defences haywire and cause a histamine reaction.
The second biggest trigger here for us is mold that forms from snow cover all winter.

There are two approaches to manage allergies: reactive and proactive. The reactive approach which is to take supplements (e.g. Vitamin C, Quercitin, probiotics) to help manage or stabilize the histamine effects, and the proactive approach is to balance the immune system now so that by the time next allergy season rolls around your system is less reactive to the environment. Try supplements such as fish oil with Omega-3, daily vitamin C and Quercitin, and probiotics, and foods such as colourful berries, onions, garlic, and broccoli.

Don’t forget about water! Water hydrates the mucous membranes and keeps the tissues from drying out and getting inflamed.

Are You Forgetful or Is It Your Thyroid?

There’s more to thyroid health than you might realize.
Thyroid hormone regulates every organ in your body, including the thyroid gland. When your thyroid gland is underfunctioning, everything in your body moves slower, which is why you might feel sluggish all over. This includes how your mind works, how you metabolize, and even how your bowels work.

"Subclinical hypothyroid” is very common, where you can have all the signs and symptoms of low thyroid, but the bloodwork looks “fine”.

This is often because some of the most important markers of thyroid function are not commonly tested in routine bloodwork. One of those markers relates to the immune system and inflammation.

If your immune system is affecting your thyroid gland, it won’t work properly until you balance out the immune system.

Poor gut health can suppress thyroid function and trigger an autoimmune condition of the thyroid known as Hashimoto’s disease, and low thyroid function can lead to an inflamed and leaky gut.

The most direct route to taking care of your thyroid is by taking care of your gut, since we have direct access to the gut.

Imagine your gut is like a garden, and in your garden you have weeds, flowers and compost.

🌺 We can fertilize the flowers using a good probiotic.
🌺 Then we can weed the garden using antimicrobials like caprylic acid.
🌺 And then we figure out what kind of compost our guts need by doing things like IgG testing to determine how foods might be affecting our immune system.
🌺 Certain supplements like Vitamin D, zinc, selenium and iodine help the thyroid produce thyroid hormone.

Miso Glazed Salmon

This healthy miso glazed salmon recipe is full of flavour and packed with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Many of us living in the prairies could use more omega-3s in our diets, and salmon is a tasty, easy way to incorporate these anti-inflammatory fatty acids into your meals.

This recipe also features fermented miso paste that is rich in probiotics. Antioxidant-rich garlic and ginger also help boost the flavour and nutrition of this dish! If you’re looking for an easy, healthy meal that doesn’t compromise on flavour, keep reading to learn how to make this deliciously sweet and savoury miso glazed salmon!

Ingredients:
✔️ 1 whole salmon fillet (about 2 lbs, skin on or off)
✔️ ¼ cup miso paste
✔️ 2 tablespoons honey (or other liquid sweetener of your choice)
✔️ ¼ cup soy sauce or liquid aminos
✔️ 2 teaspoons rice vinegar
✔️ 2 garlic cloves, minced
✔️ 2-inch knob of ginger, grated
✔️ Optional: Sesame seeds and sliced green onions for garnish

Directions:
1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C)
2. Start by preparing your glaze. In a small bowl, combine the miso paste, honey, soy sauce or aminos, rice vinegar, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Whisk until smooth and fully combined.
3. Lay the salmon fillet (skin-side down if it has skin), on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Using a brush or spoon, generously spread the miso glaze over the top and sides of the salmon fillet.
4. Bake in the preheated oven for about 18-22 minutes, or until the salmon is cooked through and flakes easily when tested with a fork. The exact cooking time may vary depending on how thick your fillet is.
5. Once cooked, remove the salmon from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes. Sprinkle on any additional garnishes and enjoy!
